(Tom Saridis: CEO & Founder of CIBO Clinic)

I own a clinic – a CIBO clinic. I battled obesity my whole life. This clinic was modeled after what my life was like and how there was no dignity provided to obese people in society. It’s the last prejudice that’s allowed.
(Current CIBO Lap band patients)

My name is Nisrine. I am 39 years old.

My name is Jody, I am 41 years old.

My name is Linda. I am 42 years old.

My name is Michelle. I am 28.

My name is Mike. I am 44 years old.

My name is Kori. I am 22 years old.

Kori: Everybody made fun of me but it’s behind me now. You have to look forward and be positive. A lot of people in this day and age tend to give up: “I’m overweight and there’s nothing I can do about it.” Well there is. This is it. This is the only thing that’s gonna make you become the person you want to be. This is the only place that’s gonna make it happen.

Mike: There was a time for me in my life to make a change. I came in here to the initial consultation. Took all the information home with me and made the decision to move forward as they say. I haven’t regretted it one iota. The last time I got on the scale, I was down roughly 106, 107 lbs. It feels great

Linda: I’ve never been successfully at keeping weight off. I was pretty impressed. Impressed enough to give them a call then I thought, “Oh, what the heck? It’s just a drive to Toronto. Why don’t I go and see what’s going on.” Once I got here, once I met some of the staff, some of the healthcare professionals here, no question. I was in the right spot. It all happened very fast after that. The energy level is unbelievable. My confidence level is right through the roof now. I tried not to pay attention to how I look. Because I figured I didn’t look and I didn’t see very few pictures of me while I was heavy.

Jody: I had given up all hope that I would ever lose weight again. CIBO clinic was designed and built as an obesity management centre first and foremost. Everything from the way the halls were structured and the chairs were designed. The door widths were planned. Everything was designed so you can come in and feel comfortable. You’re not trying to fit into a world that doesn’t fit you. Everybody that comes in understands what you are going through and they acknowledge what you are going through. Everybody offers a little bit of insight because they’re either going through it or they’ve been through it themselves.

Nisrine: I use to live in a world where 295 lb girls live. It’s a very different world from the world that I live in today. When we’re very large, we tell ourselves that we’re not that bad. We stopped looking mirrors and my favourite things were to seat at home and watch TV. My friends were people who like to seat at home and watch TV and snack. As I lost weight and I felt better about myself, I like shopping for clothes and I like going out.

Kori: You can’t give up on life. You have to be happy with who you are and the only way you will be happy is if you make yourself happy.

Michelle: When I came here, it was frightening. They were just giving me information. They were telling me what they do and telling me how it could fit in my life.

Jody: They just want what’s in your best interest to happen.

Kori: You have to look forward. Be positive because it doesn’t matter about the past, it matters about the future.

Tom: My story might be a little different for the next person but at the end of the day, we have a common goal here. That is to provide people dignity and self-esteem. It makes all the difference in the world.

History of the Adjustable Gastric Banding Procedure

Gastric banding has emerged as an important tool in the treatment and long-term management of morbid obesity that is safe and has few side effects. It is now a popular choice for the surgical treatment of obesity. The following outlines the history of the adjustable gastric banding procedure.

The earliest research on adjustable gastric banding can be traced back to Dr. G. Szinicz of Austria who worked with an adjustable band that he attached to a tissue port in animals. In 1986, a Ukrainian surgeon, Dr. Lubomyr Kuzmak used an adjustable silicone gastric band in open surgery. Kuzmak, who had been looking for a safe procedure to treat obesity, made some important modifications to his original non-adjustable band by creating an adjustable component. The result was a decrease in complications and improved weight loss. Similarly, in Stockholm Sweden, Dr. Dag Hallberg and his assistant Peter Forsell, created an adjustable gastric band. It was named the Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band (SAGB). In 1985, Dr. Dag Hallberg submitted an application for the SAGB to be used in Scandinavian countries.

In 1985, Dr. Hallberg gave a presentation on the ‘balloon band’ concept to the Swedish Surgical Society. He began to use the balloon band by doing the open surgical technique to insert the SAGB. Between 1991 and 1993, modifications were performed on the original SAGB to make it appropriate for laparoscopic implantation. In 1993, Dr. Broadbent in Australia and Dr. Catona in Italy implanted non-adjustable gastric bands through laparoscopy. In 1994, Dr. Forsell showcased the SAGB at an international workshop for bariatric surgery that was held in Sweden. From that point on, the SAGB began to be implanted laparoscopically. On September 1st, 1993, the first human laparoscopic implantation of the Lap-Band was performed by Dr. Belachew and Dr. le Grand in Huy, in Belgium.

In 1995, Lap-Band FDA approved clinical trials began in the US with the first patient surgery in the United States. In 2001, the Lap-Band System was approved by the FDA for use in the US. In 2007, the sales of the lap band system exceeded 100,000. In 2007, the third generation, Lap-Band AP System, the most improved gastric band technology was released. As well, during this time period sales of the Lap-Band AP System increased to over 300,000 in the US. By the beginning of 2011, over 650,000 Lap-Band AP had been sold across the globe.

Surgery to treat morbid obesity has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a weight loss method for educated patients that are motivated to lose weight. More people are now benefiting from the Lap-Band procedure. If you have a BMI over 30, you should talk to your doctor about the Lap-Band procedure as it may help you lose weight and avoid obesity related health risks. The Lap-Band procedure has proven to significantly reduce weight and body mass. The results of having the procedure can help you live a longer and healthier life.

The Rise of Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Procedures as a way to Treat Obesity

There are various causes of obesity that include: lifestyle habits, genetics, and environmental issues. Lack of exercise, high-calorie food intake, overeating, and consumption of too much food, can all contribute to obesity. Obesity related health conditions include: heart disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, arthritis, sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. In recent years, obesity has been on the rise. Traditional diet and exercise programs have been shown to be ineffectual at treating obesity over the long term. Because, obesity can be treated medically and surgically, there has been a significant rise of Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, also known as Lap-Banding, is a type of weight loss surgery designed for obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. It uses an inflatable adjustable gastric Lap-Band which is implanted around the top portion of a person’s stomach by way of laparoscopic surgery. For people younger than 21 years of age, the rate of laparoscopic adjustable gastric Lap-Banding (LAGB) increased 7-fold from 2005 to 2007 according to the results of a study in the United States reported in the print issue of Pediatrics. As well, a report presented at the 26th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in June 2008 showed that 31,333 bariatric surgery procedures were performed from 2004 to 2007. During this period, the use of laparoscopic adjustable gastric lap-banding procedures increased from 7% to 23%. As well, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development says 25 per cent of Canadians are obese, and the rate is expected to increase by five per cent over the next 10 years. The result has been an increase in Lap-Band procedures in Canada.

The popularity of Lap-Banding is due to the surgery being a safe and minimally invasive procedure. As well, it is a fully reversible procedure. The lower cost and lower morbidity rates compared with laparoscopic gastric bypass is another benefit of having the procedure. Because the Lap-Band is adjustable, individual care can be optimized to meet the patient’s needs after the procedure. People who choose the Lap-Band technique tend to lose the desired weight and keep it off long term. It is a beneficial procedure as it can help a person with excess weight feel full and satisfied eating less which results in a dramatic weight loss. The procedure is an outpatient procedure and recovery time is good as people can get on with their lives reasonably quickly after surgery.

Lap-band procedures are safe. In fact, on Feb. 16, 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave approval to expand the use of the Lap-Band to include obese individuals with a BMI of 30 to 34 who also have an existing conditions related to their obesity. With the Lap-Band, no cutting or stapling is involved like the gastric bypass surgery and less than 1% of patients report any complications. If you are interested in Lap-Band surgery take the time to investigate the procedure so you will make an informed decision. This will ensure that you get the best weight loss outcome and you will live a longer and healthier life while feeling great about your physical appearance.

Michelle’s Lap Band Story – Part 6

Hi. It’s been a while since we had a talk and I guess that’s cause life just passes by so quickly. You blink and it’s been a month or a month and a half. I will talk about where I am and how things are going.

Things have been going good but I’m not gonna seat here and make it seem that everything has been perfect cause it hasn’t. Things get hard. After the initial large weight loss, it slows down. I’m probably losing about 5, 6 or 7 pounds a month which normally is amazing and I couldn’t imagine that. But once you’ve been losing 5 pounds in a week and you turn around and you’re only losing 6 pounds a month, you think you’re doing something wrong. It just seems that it’s time for you to change your routine or add something new or take something away. I think the hardest part now is living with the band. I really do feel full so often. Everything I eat really sits in my stomach and I do feel satisfied. The main problem becomes is that you have to convince your brain that you’re not hungry. Even though your stomach feels full, your brain is constantly saying: “Go to the kitchen. What’s there?” While you’re sitting at home, watching TV at night you have to fight that battle. When your brain from so many years of conditioning of getting up and sitting on the couch, eating all night. Even though your stomach is full, your brain is still saying: “What’s in the cupboard? What could you get? Try this. Have some of this” and really you don’t want it. So it’s a weird battle of brain and stomach. I’m trying and sometimes I win the battle and occasionally I lose but that’s life and life is full of battles.

My great therapist, she’s amazing. She came with all this stuff [about] the surgery and she says to me and I said [when] I came in one day, “I feel really crappy, I had a horrible day. I feel really bad” and she said to me, “Michelle, it’s not about not being bad because you can not be bad in life. There is always gonna be something that you ate that you didn’t want to eat or something that you did but probably shouldn’t have done. It’s not about avoiding those things, it’s about managing them and she said “When you have ups and downs in life, your ups and downs go up and down and up and down when you’re sitting on the couch and eating all these horrible things for you. Your ups and downs are substantially larger. Once you learn to manage those, she said, “You’re ups and downs becomes so steady that it almost feels like a straight line even though there’s ups and downs. That is what life is really about is learning how to manage your ups and downs and make them containable so that you don’t feel this horrible feeling when you eat something. This is not a diet. This is not a way of life that I have to live now where I can only eat salad. I can eat whatever I want well I should be careful when I say that cause I can’t eat whatever I want because the band limits you. Technically with all of this, you can still eat some of that crappy stuff. I could still have a cookie or a small piece of cake. All of that will still go down and it’s about controlling it from my end and learning to do that – fighting the battle. I find that the way that I beat it is by keeping myself busy and trying to do things that I may have not normally done like if I feel like I need to eat something [then] put little bit of laundry or go out and visit a friend or drink a herbal tea. Any of these things they’ll keep you from doing something hurtful to what you have done.

I went to overeaters anonymous recently because I was fighting the battle of brain versus stomach and I find that they say it’s really about doing something different and keeping yourself busy. I work with kids for so many years and I always say that boredom is what gets kids in trouble. Boredom is what gets kids in jail. I look at it now and boredom is what makes people fat and boredom is what ends up killing people and ruining their lives. That’s not what I want anymore. Although it’s a struggle, I lost about 60 pounds now which feels amazing. People are starting to notice now. People at work are like, “Are you watching what you eat?” and I’m always saying, “I’m trying. I’m trying” because that’s all I’m doing is trying. I’m lucky that I found something like the band that was able to guide me to where I needed to be. Although I have all this new found strength, I’m able to go through with it but really the band is my backbone. It’s my partner. It’s what keeps me on top. I’ve had my fills maybe around 5 or 6. I’m sitting at about 6.2. My band’s max is a 9. Everybody’s different so it doesn’t really matter what number you’re at. It’s just giving a rough reference.
I’m really sorry that I haven’t blogged in awhile and that’s just because life happens and it’s hard. In the beginning there’s so much to talk about. It’s all so exciting. Everything is great and you’re on top of the world and everything is wonderful. It’s been 3, 4 months and you’re at a point where you’re like, “Okay, I’m still going” but there’s not that exciting stuff anymore and now I’m convincing myself to keep on pushing because I deserve it and I do and so do you.

I have a cousin and I’ve been trying to get him on top of things and make him intuitive. I see where he’s at and I realize to myself that it makes me realize that you can’t force anybody into this stuff. You have to be ready. I was totally ready and I am dedicated to this for the rest of my life. Whether it happens in 6 months or a year and half whatever the case may be. I’m ready and I’m willing to stick out that time and let it happen. I, of course want to rush it. My sister is getting married in August and I would love to be a beautiful, thin, flourishing maid of honour. We’ll see how that goes. I will keep in touch and hopefully I can get there.

Finding things to motivate you and give you that little push a little bit further is important. Whether it be a wedding or for me, I really want to do yoga but I’m unable to get into some of the positions yet so that’s a motivating factor for me. I want to get at that point. One more exciting thing and as silly and stupid as this sounds, I said to my boss yesterday who’s my good friend by the way, “I can cross my leg.” and she was like, “Couldn’t you always do that?” And my response was, “No”, I couldn’t. I couldn’t sit with my legs cross and now I’m at a point where I can comfortably cross my legs and sit down. It’s still a little pull but I’m there and I’m comfortable. Baby steps towards where I ultimately where I want to be. That’s what I’m doing and that’s what I hope everybody is doing is taking baby steps whether it’s towards weight loss or towards getting a career or towards finishing school or whatever it is. I hope that you can find the inspiration to continue moving forward to whatever it is your goal is. I hope I can do the same and let’s keep on tracking. Thanks so much and I promise it won’t be so long till the next time.

What is the Recovery Time for the Lap Band Surgery?

For the millions of people suffering from obesity and obesity related health problems, weight loss surgery can be a beneficial weight loss solution. One weight loss surgery that has proven to be effective at helping bariatric patients lose the weight and keep it off is lap-band surgery. This medical procedure is minimally invasive and the recovery period is quite minimal which makes it a popular weight loss solution.

The length of the actual lap band surgery is only about thirty minutes and patients can normally go home the same day. Most patients go home within 3-4 hours after having the surgery. As well, patients are usually out of bed within an hour of having the surgery. The lap-band that is inserted around the upper portion of the stomach, forms a gastric pouch that makes the patient feel full so they eat less and lose weight. For the first week after surgery, patients are mobile and are able to move around freely. They are encouraged to walk but must refrain from exercise or lifting heavy objects. They drink liquid to allow the stomach to adjust to the lap-band and the reduced stomach size.

Weight loss surgeons will normally tell their patients that the surgery is not a quick fix. Patients will need sufficient time for recovery so they can begin to work again. Lap band surgery patients will often return to work within 3-5 days unless they have a strenuous job. They will normally see their doctor a month after the post-operative recovery period to get their first fill of saline to restrict the band.

Right after the lap-band surgery, patients consume water, popsicles or suck ice. Then, they consume clear fluids, and from the second week following the surgery, patients may start eating thicker consistency liquids progressively moving to solid foods. Weight loss patients should avoid foods rich in fats, complex carbohydrates, and sugars. When patients follow the precise post surgery guidelines it will significantly help them with their recovery help them lose the excess weight at a good rate, and manage their weight loss properly.

The lap-band surgery recovery period is vital to a patient’s weight loss success. As well as giving the stomach time to heal, the patient will learn to eat the right foods and portion sizes. Eating portions that are too large can cause the pouch to stretch resulting in complications and can cause the lap-band to slip in the wrong position.

For those suffering from obesity affecting their health, traditional diet programs and products have proven to be unsuccessful lap-band surgery has become a proven and popular method of achieving weight loss for those suffering from obesity. If you are considering undergoing lap-band surgery, it is important to be prepared for the recovery period. It is always wise to consult with a physician on your weight loss options and determine if you are a suitable candidate for the lap-band weight loss procedure.

What is the Diet for the First Month after Lap-band Surgery?

Lap-band surgery is a proven weight loss surgery that has been chosen by hundreds of thousands of obese people around the world. After undergoing weight loss surgery such as lap-band surgery, it is normal for patients to want to begin losing weight immediately. However, when having this effective and minimally invasive weight loss procedure, it is important to understand that there will be a change in diet to assist in healing after the surgery.

It is important to understand the importance of a staged diet during the first month after having lap-band surgery. The diet is designed to allow the stomach to adjust to the lap-band system and minimize the risk of potential complications. Right after the procedure, there will be a phased diet to follow that will consist of the proper amounts of nutrition and portions. Once waking up from the surgery, you will normally drink water or eat ice chips. Because the surgery involves inserting a lap-band, which creates a gastric pouch, the stomach will only be able to hold a small amount of food. Adjusting to the change gradually will prevent post surgery complications such as vomiting and band slippage. This new diet also helps promote weight loss.

During the first week of recovery, patients consume thin clear liquids that have the right amount of protein, but are low in calories. Types of foods consumed during this period can include: fruit juice, gatorade, popsicles, and broth. As well, the patient will drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

During the weeks and months after a patient undergoes lap-band surgery, the food the patient consumes will vary in consistency and nutritional value. As patients near the one month point, solid foods are introduced in the diet. The diet after lap-band surgery will vary in texture, portions, and it will be nutrient specific so it is essential to consult with your nutritionist to make sure you completely understand the diet program and are properly prepared properly to follow the diet.

It is essential that you stick to the post lap-band surgery diet so you lose your desired excess weight, but you also minimize the chance of uncomfortable complications that may require further surgery. Lap-band surgery has had many successful results for people suffering from obesity and its health-related issues because patients realize that it takes a serious commitment to the post-lap-band diet.

Lap Band Stories – Alex’s Story Part 2 – CIBO Clinic

Hi! It’s Alex Again! I’m here to talk about my experiences with CIBO Clinic. I found CIBO after I made the decision to have Lap Band Surgery. I found CIBO Clinic online when I was doing my research on the different clinics that were available to me, to help me out. And I went and visited with five of them.

I decided ultimately to go with CIBO Clinic because of a number of reasons. The first was Nisrine Shammas. I went in there and had a consultation with Nisrine and it was truly that, a consultation. She talked to me about what I felt my issues were and what the lap band can do for me and what CIBO can do for me. She didn’t really push me into any kind of sale. There was one clinic that I went to where I felt as if the guy was pushing a used car on me. It didn’t make me feel comfortable at all considering that his is my life and that this is the rest of my body’s health on the line. And Nisrine did a really good job of making me feel comfortable at CIBO Clinic and not treating me just like a customer. I don’t feel like I’m just a customer at CIBO.

After talking to Nisrine and having an initial consultation on the general procedure and what it’s about, how much it costs, how much time it will take and all that good stuff that Nisrine walks you through, I got to meet the surgeon. His name is Dr. Dennis Hong. He is a very cool guy! I have to say. When I originally met him, I thought that it was a joke as the guy seemed like he was 22 years old but he’s a doctor. I checked it out. Apparently, he does a really good job. He made me feel really comfortable.

The next stage with Dr. Dennis Hong was to go get some blood work done to make sure that I was healthy enough on the inside as well as the out to get the procedure done. I’ve completed that stage and that was relatively simple. You just take a form with you to a separate blood clinic and they run the tests and send it over to CIBO so that Dr. Dennis Hong can look over your chart and see if you’re okay and good to go. So far, it looks like I am good to go for the surgery.

I look forward to talking to Nisrene again and having Dr. Dennis Hong work on me!

General Guidelines On Post Lap Band Surgery Diet

Lap band surgery is an effective method to achieving a large amount of weight loss. After patients undergo lap band surgery, they will have to follow a strict new diet that must be adhered to in order to prevent post surgery complications such as band slippage and vomiting. As well, the new diet will ensure they begin to form good habits that will help them lose the excess weight. During the recovery period, there are specific time periods when foods are introduced in various textures. You should discuss the post lap band diet with your nutritionist to ensure you have a complete understanding of the diet.

The following are a number of general guidelines on post lap band surgery diet:

Lap Band Surgery – First Several Days: After lap band surgery, it is very important to follow the post-op diet stages carefully to ensure full healing of the band. You will be sipping water and sucking on ice cubes to stay hydrated. You will also be drinking clear fluids and liquid protein for nourishment. The main purpose of this stage is to remain hydrated and allow healing.

Weeks 1 to 2 – Liquid Diet: You will be able to drink liquids such as strained soups, fruit and vegetable juices with no added sugar, milk, low fat yogurt, and protein shakes.

Week 3 – Pureed Foods: You will introduce slightly textured foods that are rich in protein and then start to introduce fruits and vegetables into your diet. The pureed foods stage prepares your body for solid food so it is important to go slowly and don’t rush it as your stomach is still adjusting. Pureed foods are the consistency of mashed potatoes. Most foods that have been placed in the blender or food processor fall into this category.

Week 4 – Soft Food transitioning to regular solids by day 7: This stage is the transition to eating regular foods. You start with softer, easier foods and then move along gradually.
To prevent swelling and irritation as well as vomiting, make sure you thoroughly chew your food.

Solid Foods: Once you can consume solid foods without complications eat only three nutrient and protein rich meals a day and two snacks if necessary. As well, chew your food thoroughly.

After you have introduced solid foods in your diet, there are certain foods that you should avoid. These foods include: doughy breads, carbonated and high calorie drinks, high calorie and fatty foods. As well, when eating, do not eat between meals, eat only quality food, and stop eating when you start to feel full. Drink plenty of water daily. Basically, you should be consuming healthy foods that are prepared in a healthy way, and the foods should be rich in nutrients and come from all of the food groups. You should also be implementing a healthy exercise plan.

The diet after lap band surgery is very specific so it is important to consult with your nutritionist and lap band surgeon to ensure that your weight loss endeavours are a success.
